about our grossglockner mountaineering holiday

Enjoy an ultimate mountain holiday experience! This week combines a high alpine ascent with a mountaineering course, acclimatisation by hiking and biking tours from our base MoaAlm, good food and a relaxing atmosphere.

The highlight of the week is climbing the Grossglockner, which is situated in our own 'backyard'. With its 3797m it is the highest mountain of Austria and should be on the bucket list of every adventurer!

Dates & planning

  • 21st - 28th September 2019

This holiday can be organized during the summer season for a minimum of 4 participants. Interested to join us as a solo traveler, couple or group? Please contact us at austria@wearactive.com or +43(0)6642441919 for more information.

mountaineering course & grossglockner ascent

You will receive a concise alpine training given by the well known local mountain guides from Kals. You will receive an introduction to rock climbing, learn material handling techniques (rope, knot and crampon handling) and slope & ice techniques (crossing firm slopes, fall prevention and recovering, crevasse rescuing). Depending on group preferences and your alpine experience, the level of training can be adjusted to the needs and desires of the participants.

The Grossglockner ascent starts at MoaAlm or Lucknerhaus (depending on weather and group preferences). A 2 to 4 hour hike will take us to the Stüdlhütte, where we will have a break. From there we will ascent over the Ködnitzkees Glacier to practice on snow and ice. Depending on weather and group preferences we will continue towards the Adlersruh hut or turn back to Stüdlhütte to spend the night. The next morning, small groups of maximum 3 participants per guide will ascent to the summit during sunrise.

Depending on experience of participants the program can be adjusted.

The program is subjected to weather conditions, but our mounatineering week could look like this:

  • Day 1 - Arrival, check-in from 17.00h
  • Day 2 - Mountain bike tour to get to know the area
  • Day 3 - Hiking tour to get 'warmed-up' and acclimatized
  • Day 4 - Alpine training part 1 - material handling and rock climbing
  • Day 5 - Alpine training part 2 - material handling and ice training, Grossglockner ascent part 1
  • Day 6 - Grossglockner ascent part 2
  • Day 7 - 'Free day', Back-up day Grossglockner ascent in case of bad weather
  • Day 8 - check-out to 10.00h

I really enjoyed my stay in MoaAlm and am really happy we made it to the summit of Grossglockner. I think this mountaineering week has lots to offer for climbers of different levels. The MoaAlm team has profound knowledge of the mountains and is in close contact with the guides, which means they are flexible to adjust the program depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the members of the group. The local mountain guides are very experienced and professional. In short: an amazing week full of alpine adventure, with the luxury of returning to MoaAlm (almost) every night to enjoy the warmth and comfort of MoaAlms hospitality!

A proper fitness level is required – you should be able to climb 400 vertical meters per hour and you should be sure-footed. Also, you should not have a fear of heights due to the exposed character of the Grossglockner.
