Snow Safety

This week combines easy touring and freeriding with snow safety training. You will improve your understanding of the different snow conditions and begin to develop the skills to assess risk whilst off piste. The week will include ca. 8 hours of theory and practical sessions on snow safety. This will also be applied and discussed during riding. Areas covered include:

  • Slab avalanches:

Avalanche basics

Snowpack, weather & terrain conditions

  • Risk management & prevention methods:

Route planning

Avalanche bulletins

Terrain assessment

  • Accident management:

Search & Recover

Rescue

First Aid

The workshops will consist of the following:

  • Daily avalanche bulletin readings, weather analysis  and terrain assessment
  •  Multiple search & recovery sessions with snow safety equipment

During our tours we will keep our eyes open on signs of potential avalanche risks. In this photograph you can clearly see where the wind came from and therefore you can expect snow drift.
We will discuss how the avalanche memorandums are structured and what to look for. We will study them everyday before going out.
